Jenny Smith graduated with Bachelor of Science from the University of Melbourne in 1973, having majored in chemistry. She worked as an occupational hygienist in the Victorian State Government Industrial Hygiene Division for 14 years, specialising in the occupational hazards of heavy metals and pesticides. During that time she commenced a Graduate Diploma in Applied Statistics with Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and graduated with distinction in 1982.
In 1987 she changed careers to the field of statistics and commenced working in the Statistical Centre at Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute in Melbourne, becoming Deputy to the Director of the Statistical Centre in 1989. Over 15 years she worked on many cancer clinical trials, mainly using survival analysis and non-parametric statistics, and was a co-author on over 40 papers in refereed journals. She also carried out her own research, an epidemiological study entitled "Case control study on soft tissue sarcoma and malignant lymphoma and exposure to phenoxy herbicides or chlorophenols", and was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in the faculty of medicine at the University of Sydney in 1992 for her thesis on this work.
Jenny obtained professional accreditation as an "Accredited statistician" (AStat) from the Statistical Society of Australia in 1998 and has maintained her accreditation since then.
In 2002 Jenny and her husband left Melbourne to return to country life and she commenced working as a biometrician (agricultural statistician) with the Victorian Department of Primary Industries at Horsham, Victoria. She provided statistical consulting services to agricultural scientists at Grains Innovation Park, Horsham, and elsewhere in the State of Victoria and introduced many scientists to Microsoft Access databases for the collection and storage of data on scientific experiments. She created over 50 databases for scientists in the Department, many of which contained multiple experiments. She was co-author on 7 papers published in refereed agricultural science journals.
In 2008 Jenny decided to work as an independent statistical consultant, although still located at Grains Innovation Park in Horsham. Since then, through Plain Statistics Pty Ltd, she has provided statistical and database services to former and new clients in both agricultural and medical research fields.
Costs
Fixed price quotations are provided, based on an estimate of the work required. Additional items are charged at A$110 per hour.
